Brief Description

Are you interested in working within The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM)? The primary role is to successfully complete an apprenticeship development programme leading to a Level 3 Mechanical Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship.

Qualifications Required

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C or 9-4 including English, maths and science , or equivalent, or a technical subject such as engineering or product design. Alternatively you can progress from a relevant Level 2 Intermediate apprenticeship programme.

You must be prepared to study and commit to an Apprenticeship in Engineering.

Training to be Provided

Engineering Maintenance NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma, EAL Engineering Technology Level 3 Diploma, BTEC or VRQ. Plus English, maths and ICT Functional Skills, Employee Rights and Responsibilities, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. You will study a range of topics including: Engineering and Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering Organisational Efficiency and Improvement

On successful completion of the apprenticeship we aim to integrate our apprentice technicians into our permanent technical staff base within SATM.

Are you interested in working within the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM)?
The primary role is to successfully complete an apprenticeship development programme leading to a Level 3 Mechanical Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship. This training position will develop the post holder to be able to provide a premier technical provision to the academic centre facilities in the School, working in partnership with technical colleagues of all levels to ensure effective operation of facilities as a whole.

Key Deliverables

To complete successful training over the apprenticeship and develop technical skills in a range of engineering disciplines and activities to support funded research work:

• Learn basic technical skills
• Learn how to provide an efficient technical support either as part of a team or individually
• Learn techniques to prepare and analyse a range of environmental samples to time and quality requirements
• Learn to operate and maintain selected equipment and instrumentation
• Contribute to the creation of Standard Operating Procedures

Be supported in undertaking a range of core, and other, tasks to support stakeholders and the successful operation of facilities:

• Understand H&S hazards
• Perform basic daily checks of equipment
• Conduct H&S checks in labs, e.g. eyewash, first aid etc.
• Understand the operation of key equipment and their associated health & safety requirements
• Contribute to the setup, delivery and clean down of practicals
• Carry out stock checks and raise purchase orders
• Support the effective operation of a selected area
• Support teaching activities occurring within the centre facilities to ensure effective and efficient delivery.
• Support co-ordination of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality compliance across the technical team and facility to ensure safe and legal operation of the facility
• Support delivery of funded research work and technical support to ensure efficient and effective service

Contribute to the safe working environment
• Comply with relevant Health & Safety procedures affecting self and others.
• Learn how to assist with performing risk assessments
• In time, develop specialist H&S roles, e.g. First Aid, Fire Marshal
• Keep up to date with all relevant developments in health safety and environment
• Be supported in the delivery of safety inductions and other laboratory inductions


To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post
