Brief Description

Bedford Modern School are looking for a Property Maintenance Apprentice who will assist with a wide range of maintenance tasks including, routine inspections, basic repairs, and preventative maintenance across the school’s buildings and systems. You will develop skills in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general building maintenance.

Bedford Modern School is an Independent Co-educational Day School. There are in excess of 1200 pupils in the School from age 7 to 18. The School is governed by the Harpur Trust (The Bedford Charity).

They are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Property Maintenance Apprentice to join their experienced Facilities Team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to start a career in building maintenance and facilities management. The role offers hands-on experience across a wide range of maintenance tasks, while supporting your formal apprenticeship training.

You will work under the supervision of skilled maintenance professionals, assisting with routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and reactive repairs across the school’s buildings and systems. This includes exposure to plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, and general building fabric.

So, what will you be doing and learning in this role?

Assist with day-to-day maintenance tasks and emergency repairs to ensure the school remains safe and operational.

Support routine inspections and preventative maintenance of systems such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical.

Help maintain tools, equipment, and materials in good working order.

Carry out basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, filters, and minor repairs.

Assist in diagnosing faults and supporting more complex repairs under supervision.

Participate in planned maintenance schedules and document all work completed.

Follow all health and safety procedures and contribute to a safe working environment.

Attend off-site apprenticeship training and complete all coursework and assessments on time.

Engage in on-the-job learning and development with the support of experienced staff.

Over time, you will be expected to take on greater responsibility and develop the competence to work more independently, while always adhering to school policies and health and safety standards.

Other Information

This is a structured apprenticeship, combining hands on work with formal training. You will need to attend training sessions, complete coursework, and meet deadlines to successfully complete the qualification. The role involves manual work, including lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions. Applicants should be comfortable with physical tasks and working on their feet for extended periods. You’ll be working in a busy school setting, often around staff and students.
