Brief Description
Looking for a rewarding and exciting career in tree work? The Parks Trust in Milton Keynes are looking to fill apprenticeship posts within our Landscape Maintenance and General Landscape teams, working in both the parks and the grid road landscape.
Qualifications Required
GCSEs in English and maths A*-E or 9-3 or Level 1 Functional Skills.
Personal Qualities
The candidate will be hard working with a desire to learn.
Skills Required
The candidate should have excellent communication skills and have, or be working towards a full driving license.
Training to be Provided
- Operating machinery and use of chainsaws, hedge trimmers, brush cutters and wood chippers
- Learn how to maintain tools
- Health and safety
- Learn how to use hand tools safely
- Identify tree species
- Felling of trees
- Cutting of trees using free fall techniques (rope and harness)
- Support aerial tree workers with mobile elevated work platform (MWEP)
- Health and safety
- Identify pests and diseases
You will gain the following qualification:
Work-Based Trees & Timber (Arboriculture) NPTC/City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma

•Chainsaw Maintenance Level 2 Award
•Crosscutting Timber Using a Chainsaw Level 2 Award
•Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm Level 2 Award

•Aerial Cutting of Trees Using Free Fall Techniques Level 3 Award
•Use of a Chainsaw From a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) Level 3 Award
You will gain knowledge in:
•The principles and importance of identifying trees and the value of using their scientific names
•The principles and importance of identifying and managing pests, diseases and disorders of trees
•Current environmental, wildlife and health and safety legislation, standards and codes of practice in relation to arboricultural works
Future Prospects
The long term aims for the successful applicant will be to join our Direct Works team as a permanent member of staff.

The Parks Trust is a self-financing charity that looks after over 6,000 acres of green space in Milton Keynes. We have opportunities to join our Landscape Maintenance team as part of a two-year apprenticeship in partnership with Bedford College.
We are looking for applicants who are looking to develop a career in amenity horticulture. You may already have some experience in the landscape or forestry industry or have an interest in horticulture and land management.
This post will suit someone who likes physical challenges and is happy to work outside in all seasons. Work includes; tree maintenance which can include felling, aerial cutting of trees from rope and harness, identify tree species and diseases use of machinery and hand tools.

The vacancy will be based outdoors and involves a lot of manual work and all kinds of weather.
