Working Week: 40 hours per week over 5 days (Monday-Friday). Typical shift pattern: 06.30-15.00 or 07.00-15.30.
Brief Description
The apprentice gardener will work along side the head gardener and other members of the estates team in ensuring that the grounds of Luton Hoo are maintained to the highest standard.
Qualifications Required
Minimum grade 3 Maths and English

A desire to build a career in horticulture/gardening.
An enthusiastic, motivated individual with a positive can-do attitude.

Skills Required
Good communication skills.
Training to be Provided
Level 2 Apprenticeship in either Horticulture or Landscape Operative. Plus: Emegency First Aid at Work, Level 2 Safe use of handling and application of pesticides, Functional Skills in English & maths (if required). You will also study a range of topics to include: Health and Safety, Business Skills, Machinery, Plant and Soil Science, Plant health

The apprentice gardener will work along side the head gardener and other members of the estates team in ensuring that the grounds of Luton Hoo are maintained to the highest standard.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain hands-on gardening experience alongside our head gardener, estate manager and other members of the gardening team whilst working towards your qualification.
Whilst at work you will be trained in maintaining the estate, gardens and waterways and you will be aware of the history of the gardens including architects and landscape gardeners who have developed the estate. You will assist in maintaining the gardens for public access and in the maintenance of bridges, banks and waterways.
Your day to day tasks will include:
• To maintain and Estate/Gardens and waterways, as directed.
• Understand and be aware of the history of the gardens including architects and landscape gardeners and how they have developed the Estate.
• Assist with the maintenance of all bridges, banks, waterways and fountains on the Estate.
• Prepare and maintain greenhouses
• Assist with the development of turf culture, hedge cutting and the pruning/training of ornamental trees and shrubs and climbing plants in many styles.
• General weed control, trimming and tidying.
• Some vegetable and herb cultivation and vinification.
• Planting and aftercare of various trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants as instructed by the Head Gardener.
• Various hard and soft landscaping tasks including turfing, paving ground works, and soil cultivation.
Other Information
The weekly wage increases in year to £250/week (if 18 or over) and £310 (if 21 or over)
