Brief Description

The role will be based at Cranfield Impact Centre and the successful applicant will support the mechanical testing activities of the current team, once the apprenticeship has successfully completed.

Qualifications Required

You must have 5 GCSE Grade A-C or 9-4, including Maths, English and Science, and either 2 A-levels Grade A-C, preferably in Maths, Science or Engineering or BTEC Level 3 in an Engineering discipline (year 1 and/or year 2), or equivalent.


Those who get through from interview will then need to attend an assessment day on either 5th or 6th August 2019.

The qualifications you will study to achieve will depend on your chosen pathway, and include:

NVQs (work-based learning)
•Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma
•Engineering Maintenance NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma
•Fabrication and Welding Engineering NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma
•Engineering Technical Support NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma.


Technical Certificates (classroom-based learning)
•Fabrication and Welding Engineering Technology Level 3 Diploma
•EAL Engineering Technology Level 3 Diploma.

During this apprenticeship you will study a range of topics, including:
•Engineering and Environmental Health and Safety

•Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding
•Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding
•Advanced Milling
•Advanced Turning

You will also study specialist units depending on the pathway you choose.

Future Prospects

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, our intention is to offer a permanent role (although this cannot be guaranteed).
This training position will develop the post holder to be able to provide mechanical test support to CIC’s testing programmes

Vacancy Detail

The role will be based at Cranfield Impact Centre and the successful applicant will support the mechanical testing activities of the current team, once the apprenticeship has successfully completed. This will involve supporting technicians in the preparation of tests by constructing jigs and building assemblies. During testing days for outside clients the apprentice will be involved in preparing of test fixtures and post-test dismantling. They will also perform general workshop tasks such as drilling, cutting and machining of metallic and composite structures.


1. To complete successful training over the apprenticeship in the following areas of mechanical workshop techniques:-
• Drilling, lathe and milling techniques
• Preparing tapped holes
• Construction of testing assemblies
• General workshop techniques with powered and non-powered tools
• Prepare CAD technical drawings and be able to interpret and discuss them

2. To be trained in the efficient use of information technology systems in order to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.

3. To participate in CIC team meetings, 121’s and other appropriate events

4. To maintain general good housekeeping of the workplace. To also understand the sensitive nature of the data produced from tests and to respect client confidentiality.

5. To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post

6. Comply with relevant Health & Safety procedures affecting self and others.

Other Information

This role will involve long periods of being on your feet and will be carried out in a workshop and lab environment.
