Brief Description

Working as a civil engineering technician apprentice providing technical support to consulting engineers who provide design services and advice to construction clients on projects all over the world.

Qualifications Required

A minimum of five GCSEs grade A*- C (9-4) or above which must include English, Maths, Science and a technology related subject.

Skills Required

Good communications, numeracy and IT skills are all important, as is the ability to work as part of a team while also having plenty of your own initiative. Strong problem solving, attention to detail and a desire to come up with practical solutions will also stand you in good stead.
To be a civil engineering technician you should:
• be good at maths and physics
• be creative and practical
• be adaptable and persevering
• be interested in using computers for design work, calculations, and testing designs
• be able to produce neat and accurate technical drawings
• be able to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise projects

Future Prospects

This apprenticeship role will enable the successful candidate to work within the field of civil, structural and geotechnical engineering design. A great start in the industry, it will open doorways to further study – perhaps a HNC and engineering degree. Upon successful completion of the two year apprenticeship, a professional qualification with the Institution of Civil Engineers awaits (TMICE). You will be receiving on-the-job training at the sharp end of engineering.

Working as a civil engineering technician apprentice providing technical support to consulting engineers who provide design services and advice to construction clients on projects all over the world. These projects could be in different sectors including: rail, bridge and building construction, marine, highways, power, commercial and industrial.

Responsibilities
Working as a technician within one or more of the company’s design teams involved in delivering projects across a variety of construction sectors.

• Production of CAD drawings
• Preparation of calculations
• Supporting the administration of projects
• Ensuring outputs meet the required standards
• Meeting agreed deadlines
• Maintaining drawing register
• Working as a member of a team.
• Contributing to providing solutions to problems.
• Working both in an office environment and on site.

Other Information

This is an office based opportunity. There will be some exposure to site work but from a consultancy viewpoint.
