Brief Description

A three and a half year Technical Apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering gaining skills/training that may include – Panel wiring, electrical hardware design, software & commissioning, robotics, computer simulation & project installation engineering tasks

Qualifications Required

5 GCSEs A*- C (9-5) or equivalent including English Language and maths + 1 Science/Engineering based subject.

A Levels are desirable

You need to have an interest in Electrical Engineering and have an aptitude for this type of Engineering work.

Have a passion for engineering and prefer a hands-on approach to learning.

Ability to work as part of a team, or a self-motivated individual.

Positive attitude to work, reliable, enthusiastic and hardworking.

Understanding of and compliance to Health and Safety procedures.

Skills Required

Good communicator – both written and verbal
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
Any engineering experience (hobbies or engineering subjects at school etc) would be an advantage.

The qualifications you will study to achieve will depend on your chosen pathway, and include:

NVQs (work-based learning)
•Electrical and Electronic Engineering NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma (incorporating level 2 Performing Engineering Operations that is studied in the first year at College)

•BTEC level 3 Diploma in Engineering

First 18 months : Two days per week at college to gain Level 2 Foundation Competence units. Remaining three days at Wood. Automation & Control office, or on site if required, performing engineering tasks. You will also have the opportunity to rotate through a number of engineering department areas relevant to the company needs. This will culminate in a Gateway assessment which must be passed to allow entry into the next phase of the apprenticeship.

Second 18 months : Two days per week at college to gain Level 3 Development Competence units. Remaining three days at Wood. Automation & Control office, or on site if required.

Also, within the second 18-24 months, final placement within chosen area, to work full time and to complete portfolio for NVQ Level 3 evidence based qualification and training towards End Point Assessment.


Duties may include:

1. Comply with company, customer & industry standards.

2. To become knowledgeable in all the different engineering departments. These are Electrical Design (both Automation and Power), PLC Software, Robotics and Simulation.

3. Assembly and panel wiring skills including the use of hand tools.

4. Electrical installation and field wiring. To include both Trunking and Conduit installations.

5. Training in the use of Autocad, Eplan and Simulation proprietary software packages

6. Support hardware and software system commissioning team.

7. Learn how to maintain progress & status documentation in accordance with company & customer administrative systems.

There is an emphasis on safe working practices at Wood. Automation & Control and individuals must comply with organisational safety requirements.

Candidates must attend an initial interview with a member of the Bedford College Apprenticeship Recruitment Team and complete an online Maths and English test which will be sent out prior to your initial interview if you meet the entry criteria.
