Brief Description

Lockheed Martin are looking to recruit now for a higher level technical apprentice in Software Engineering to start in September 2019.

Qualifications Required

The salary on this position will only be offered to candidates who have all of the listed qualifications below. Candidates who have the required GCSEs may be considered for a Level 3 Apprenticeship on a lower starting salary.
To be considered for the role you must have:

•Grades A*-C or 9-5 in GCSE English and maths, or equivalent

Plus one or more of the following…
•A-Levels or equivalent educational attainment
•OR - A full Level 3 apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals
•OR - A full Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject(s) (ideally 160-260 UCAS points).
•OR - Employment in an IT role for a number of years.

Personal Qualities

A highly motivated individual
A strong communicator, both written and verbal
IT proficient.
Software engineering aware

Skills Required

• Engineering experience through education, especially practical experience.
• Previous programming experience through education.
• Previous programming experience through employment.
• Previous IT or engineering experience through employment.
• Presentation skills gained through the opportunity to present work completed
• BTEC Further Maths if available

Training to be Provided

Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship

•HND in Computing (optional)
•Knowledge Module 1: Software Development Methodologies
•Knowledge Module 2: Software Language

Vacancy Detail

Lockheed Martin are looking to recruit a higher level technical apprentice in Software Engineering.

On site training at LMUK Ampthill will see the individual embedded into various projects and functional roles, to allow the full design lifecycle to be captured and employed. This will also provide the individual the opportunity to select where they would like to pursue a post apprenticeship career, allowing any specialised training or development to be undertaken.


• Design and write software
• Unit testing of the software
• Building kernels on Linux
• Customer demonstrations of functionality
• Supporting prototype vehicle build and test

You should currently be undertaking, or have completed, a course leading to a recognised level 3 qualification in a mathematics, IT, science or other technology related subject; e.g. ‘A’ Levels, BTEC level 3 Diploma or equivalent Level 3 qualification. The apprenticeship will entail continued study, via day release, at college, which will lead to the completion of the following qualifications:
• HNC completed at the end of the first year
• HND completed at the end of the second year
• Degree completed at the end of the third or fourth year (subject to confirmation)

Further qualifications are fully encouraged by LMUK Ampthill post apprenticeship, with a robust mentoring programme firmly established on site. Professional accreditation is also proactively encouraged, with mentoring, support and guidance provided.


Phase 1, Two year day release at college to gain HNC, supported by business area deployment in various departments to obtain a broad spectrum of experience.
Phase 2, One year day release at college to gain HND, supported by focused business area deployment.
Phase 3, Up to two years day release (1 year as an apprentice/1 year as an engineer following completion of 4 year scheme), at a local university, to gain a recognised Software related degree supported by specialised business area deployment.
