Brief Description

Lockheed Martin are looking to recruit now for a technical apprentice in Systems Engineering to start in September 2019.

Qualifications Required

The salary on this position will only be offered to candidates who have all of the listed qualifications below. Candidates who have the required GCSEs may be considered for a Level 3 Apprenticeship on a lower starting salary.

To be considered for the role you must have:

• A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*-C or 9-4,
• Two A-Levels in relevant subject area (e.g. Mathematics and Physics)
Or Engineering Level 3 (or BTEC equivalent e.g. diploma or extended diploma).
• IT proficient (ideally Microsoft Office)

Personal Qualities

A highly motivated individual
A strong communicator, both written and verbal
IT proficient.
Software engineering aware

Skills Required

• Engineering experience through education, especially practical (workshop) experience.
• Production of engineering drawings, especially in line with British Standard (BS) 8888
• Electrical Engineering experience through education, especially with regard to British and International Standards.

Training to be Provided

The qualifications you will study to achieve will depend on your chosen pathway, and include:

NVQs (work-based learning)
•Electrical and Electronic Engineering NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma (incorporating level 2 Performing Engineering Operations that is studied in the first year at College)


Technical Certificates (classroom-based learning)
•EAL level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering Technology
•BTEC level 3 90-credit Diploma in Engineering
•BTEC level 3 Diploma in Engineering

Lockheed Martin are looking to recruit a technical apprentice in Systems Engineering.

Systems Engineering is the enabling discipline and approach which underpins the successful delivery and acceptance of complex systems. It is an interdisciplinary approach requiring a system level perspective allied to a structured development process throughout the project and product lifecycle.

On site training at LMUK Ampthill will see the individual embedded into various projects and functional roles, to allow the full design lifecycle to be captured and employed. This will also provide the individual the opportunity to select where they would like to pursue a post apprenticeship career, allowing any specialised training or development to be undertaken.


Work place deployments consist of (but not limited to) the following Business Areas:
•Systems Engineering Team
•Protection Systems
•Vehicles
•Special Projects
•System Integration Team

Typical duties could include:
•Support to Lead Engineer with development, review and update on project artifacts appropriate to project phase and area of assigned responsibility.
•Requirements Engineering: including requirements interpretation, derivation, capture and linkage.
•Systems Architecture: Definition and analysis of system components and interfaces.
•Support design reviews addressing requirements and process compliance.
•Development of Interface Control Documents
•Management of System Design through its life cycle.
•Co-ordination between key design disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical and Software engineering.
•Support to system integration and product qualification


This apprenticeship will entail continued study at college, which will lead to the completion of the following qualifications:
• Level 3 NVQ in Engineering (started at college and completed in the workplace)
• HNC completed at end of second year (via day release)
• HND completed at end of third year (via day release)
• Potential option to start BSc in fourth year (via day release, subject to confirmation)
Further qualifications are fully encouraged by LMUK Ampthill post apprenticeship, with a robust mentoring programme firmly established on site. Professional accreditation is also proactively encouraged, with mentoring, support and guidance provided.


Phase 1, Two year day release at college to gain HNC, supported by business area deployment in various departments to obtain a broad spectrum of experience.
Phase 2, One year day release at college to gain HND, supported by focused business area deployment.
Phase 3, Up to two years day release, at a local university, to gain a recognised Electro/Mechanical related degree supported by specialised business area deployment.
